Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), is a condition where you can feel stuck in a cycle of unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviours that you feel compelled or driven to do, despite not wanting to. You might notice that certain thoughts pop into your mind over and over, even when you try to ignore them. These thoughts may make you anxious or uncomfortable, and to ease that feeling, you may find yourself doing specific actions or routines, like checking, cleaning, counting, or repeating things until they feel “right.” Even if you might know the thoughts don’t make sense, or the behaviours may take up a lot of time, it can still feel almost impossible to stop. Everyone who struggles with obsessive thinking or compulsive behaviours knows how difficult it can be to carry out your daily activities, engage in your relationships and live the life you want to live with these symptoms.

There are a range of excellent evidence-based treatments available to treat OCD. Our OCD therapists in Melbourne are here to help, so if you find yourself struggling, please contact us to find out more. We offer counselling in Footscray and psychologists in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.

Symptoms and impacts of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

OCD can feel quite debilitating at times, but there are some organisations that provide resoruces to help. The Mental Health Foundation in Australia offers OCD support groups both online and face-to-face and other resources to support people living with OCD. Mental Health Online is an Australian organisation that also offers free online modular programs which you can work through at your own pace, to support understanding and management of OCD. These programs are based on Cogntitive Behavioural Therapy, which is a leading evidence-based treatment for OCD. Other therapies that might help are Acceptance and Comittment Therapy, or Psychodynamic-Informed Therapy.

Have a question? Take a look below… these are some of the common questions we get.

No referral is needed to book a session, but if you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you might be eligible for Medicare rebates.

Yep, life happens! Just give us at least 48 hours’ notice so we can offer that spot to someone else. Cancellations within 48 hours will incur a fee.

We don’t usually offer instalment plans, but if money’s tight, chat with us privately – we’re happy to see how we can find a solution.

The Medicare rebates are listed above, but if you on WorkCover, TAC or VOCAT the gap fees tend to be lower. With private insurance, we find they tend to be on-par with Medicare rebates. We can help you understand what’s covered and what your gap fee will be – just ask us when booking.

No worries! You can book on their behalf, just make sure you have their consent and relevant details to help our intake process.
