Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, concentration, emotional regulation, impulsivity and energy levels. ADHD presents differently from person to person, and can impact the way individuals think, learn, organise, communicate, and manage everyday tasks. While some people experience difficulties with focus and distractibility, others may experience impulsivity, emotional overwhelm, or periods of intense hyperfocus on activities they enjoy. As ADHD and Autism are both neurodevelopmental conditions, sometimes people who have them call themselves Neurodivergent.
Neurodivergence, or having a neurodevelopmental condition, means your brain works in a way that’s different from what people consider “typical.” If you’re neurodivergent, you might think, learn, feel, or process the world in your own unique way. This isn’t something bad or wrong — it’s simply a different way your brain is wired. You might notice that certain things feel harder for you than they seem for others, like focusing, social situations, or managing emotions. At the same time, you may also have strengths that come from the way your mind works, like creativity, deep focus, strong memory, or seeing patterns others miss.

ADHD Traits
Being neurodivergent doesn’t mean you’re broken or need to be “fixed.” It means your brain has its own style, and sometimes the world isn’t built with that style in mind. You might need different kinds of support or strategies to help you navigate daily life, but your way of thinking is still valid and valuable. Sometimes people who have ADHD may have secondary mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression or difficulties with their self-esteem. We offer psychologists in Footscray and service the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
While you don’t need “treatment” for ADHD, sometimes talking to a psychologist can help to work on the secondary issues, such as anxiety or depression. There are also some techniques and interventions proven to help people with some of the difficulties pertaining to ADHD, which is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Some organisations that might be useful to explore include ADDults with ADHD, a long-standing organisation providing free information packs, newsletters, and a heavily engaged online community for adults and families. Similarly, ADHD Australia offers an education hub with digital resources, live expert speaker events, and a support community. The ADHD Foundation Australia offers support and has a national hotline.
