Autism (ASD)
What is Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder)?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts how someone communicates, interacts, and processes the world around them. Everybody who has Autism can present differently, and there is no “one size fits all” approach. If you have Autism or ADHD, both of which are neurodevelopmental conditions, this is sometimes called being neurodivergent.
Neurodivergence means your brain works in a way that’s different from what people consider “typical.” If you’re neurodivergent, you might think, learn, feel, or process the world in your own unique way. This isn’t something bad or wrong — it’s simply a different way your brain is wired. You might notice that certain things feel harder for you than they seem for others, like focusing, social situations, or managing emotions. At the same time, you may also have strengths that come from the way your mind works, like creativity, deep focus, strong memory, or seeing patterns others miss.
Our psychologists in Footscray offer neuroaffirming and evidence-based support for people who are struggling with their mental health secondary to their Autism. Additionally, we also offer Autism Assessment in Melbourne for all ages. We’re here to help, so please contact us to find a psychologist in Melbourne.
Autistic Traits
Being neurodivergent doesn’t mean you’re broken or need to be “fixed.” It means your brain has its own style, and sometimes the world isn’t built with that style in mind. You might need different kinds of support or strategies to help you navigate daily life, but your way of thinking is still valid and valuable. Sometimes people who are Autistic means may have secondary mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression.
While you don’t need “treatment” for Autism, sometimes talking to a psychologist can help to work on the secondary issues, such as anxiety or depression. There are also some techniques and interventions proven to help people with some of the difficulties pertaining to Autism, which is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Some organisations that might be useful to explore include Amaze, which aims to create an autism-inclusive Australia and offers support services, information and a national hotline. The Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS) offers support and linkages for children and adults with Autism and their families. Similarly, the Australian Autism Alliance is the national peak body furthering the rights and interests of Autistic people across the life span, their parents and carers, and the autism community in Australia.
Common signs of Autism include:
- Differences in social communication — unique ways of interacting, connecting, or expressing thoughts
- Alternative communication styles — preferring direct language, clear instructions, or extra processing time
- Repetitive or self‑soothing behaviours — movements or routines that help with comfort and regulation
- Strong preference for predictability — feeling more at ease with familiar routines and clear expectations
- Focused interests — deep passion or expertise in specific topics or activities
- Sensory differences — heightened or reduced sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or smells
- Differences in social engagement — preferring smaller groups, structured interactions, or solo time
- Unique problem‑solving or thinking patterns — noticing details, patterns, or perspectives others may overlook
