Gender Diversity
What is gender diversity?
Gender identity is how you experience and perceive yourself, how you share that with the world, and how you wish to be treated by others. Human Rights Campaign defines gender identity as “a person’s deeply held, internal sense of being male, female, a combination of both, or neither”. We recognise that gender exists on a broad spectrum, including labels such as man, woman, non-binary, trans, gender fluidity… or a blend of labels…or a desire not to be labelled at all! If you feel like the you were assigned at birth does not necessarily feel congruent to your gender, it may cause distress or discomfort.
Your identity is valid and we stand with our gender-queer community. We are committed to providing a safe, celebratory, and affirming space for trans and gender diverse individuals to explore their identities. Gender diversity is not a mental health disorder. However, we recognise that living in a society that often pressures individuals to conform can be incredibly taxing. Our psychologists understand the impact of this, and can support you. The right kind of support can make a big difference, so please contact us today to find out more. We offer counselling in Footscray and our psychologists service the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
Navigating life as a gender diverse person
Navigating school, work, and relationships is hard enough without the added weight of identity-related stress. Our psychologists provide a non-judgmental, private environment where you can be your true self. We are here to help you build resilience, manage stress, and thrive as the person you know yourself to be. You might feel unsure about who you are, what you want, or where you fit in. You may feel confused about your values, interests, or goals, and this can create a sense of feeling lost or disconnected from yourself and others. You may find that other people in your life also struggle to accept your gender identity.
While these challenges are common, they can sometimes lead to deeper struggles with mood, sleep, or coping. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, withdrawn, or “tired of life,” it may be time to speak with someone who can affirm you and support you to navigate the difficulties. Talking therapies that might help may include things like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy.
Some common stressors include:
- Social pressure: Feeling the need to deny or hide your true self to fit in
- Lack of support: Feeling misunderstood by family, friends, or healthcare providers
- Transphobia: Facing insensitivity or bullying based on your identity.
- Anticipatory anxiety: Worrying about whether you will be accepted by those you love
Signs it might be time to reach out:
- Feeling more irritable, anxious, or sad than usual.
- Changes in your sleep or appetite.
- Withdrawing from friends or experiencing increased conflict at home.
- Persistent negative thoughts or feelings of hopelessness.
So, what can I do?
Living as a gender diverse person may bring some challenges, and if you’re struggling, it might be time to reach out. We respect your journey. We will always use your affirmed name and pronouns, and you remain in control of your personal information. A psychologist can help by offering tools to manage these feelings, improve coping skills, and support lifestyle changes that promote long‑term wellbeing. Therapy can also help individuals navigate the impact of gender diversity on relationships, work, and identity.
We practice in a gender-affirming, supportive, trauma-informed way. Please contact us to find a psychologist in Melbourne who is a good fit.
We have Medicare rebate psychologists available, and we offer telehealth psychologists, Workcover psychologists and TAC psychologists.
